Handmade Hawaiian pāpale niu (coconut hat) Coco Shade Hawai’i draws inspiration from our kupuna (ancestors) and Hawaiian culture. These Papale niu (coconut hat) are created on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. Coconut hats were used by fisherman, farmers and gatherers working the lo'i (taro patch). Today they are still used for those purposes in addition to wall art, fashion, decoration, and many outdoor activities. In Hawai'i, the coconut trees are considered "the tree of life" because they never stop producing! With the many different uses of the coconut tree, coconut hats are our favorite to create.
